It seems like everybody’s doing it, and why shouldn’t they? If things go well, then everybody will see how important it is to follow this trend. Hewlett-Packard recently announced their latest versions of printers: the HP LaserJet P2055dn and the HP LaserJet P2055n. These are monochrome printers that offer new solutions for a world with a stressed environment.
These printers reduce how much paper and energy is used on average. More people everywhere are asking, and even demanding, that products and services be “green”. Companies are deciding they need to heed that call and Hewlett-Packard is one of them. Because there were delays in removing hazardous parts of their laptops, Greenpeace started protests against them not all that long ago, in July 2009. HP realized that they should be doing things differently, so they did what they could and managed to rank as the greenest Fortune 500 company. Talk about a change in strategy!
The new LaserJet P2055-series printers are Energy Star label compliant. They are primarily focused on small- to medium-sized businesses with a 35-page per minute (ppm) print speed. The new technology used in both of these new printers reduces energy use by up to 50% when compared to more traditional technology, according to HP.
Both printers have been designed to quickly and easily print on both sides of one paper, paper that can be 100% recycled without any problems. Both printers are designed to print 35 pages in one minute with 1200 dots in each inch printed. They also include a 2 by 16 inch LCD display.
For the purpose of helping administrators manage paper and energy use, HP released the “Hewlett-Packard Eco Solutions Print Console” so it could be done from a personal computer. Also, they have a Carbon Footprint Calculator designed to assist users in reducing their carbon footprint during the printing process. Despite all the additional tools and technology, these printers are expected to be surprisingly reasonably priced.
To further their green efforts, Hewlett-Packard announced that their HP ink cartridges will be made from recycled plastic. Though many ink cartridges are rather small, when combined, it can add up to quite a lot. For this company, the plan was to use ten million pounds of recycled material. This recycled plastic is derived from recycled bottles and other goods.
HP has committed to reducing their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25 percent between the years 2005 and 2010. The company states that it knows helping the environment and lowering their carbon footprint in the world begins with research and development, finding better ways of doing business. The entirety of the technology industry has certainly had an impact on the environment. Now that the truth has been revealed, they need to step forward and accept the consequences. HP seems to be doing that with the number of programs that have begun in that vein.
The company states it was the first computer manufacturer to run its own recycling operations in 1997. They set a goal for the year 2007, and that was to recycle at least one billion pounds of materials and products, and they succeeded. Now HP provides several options for its customers such as returning, recycling, donating, and trading in used components.
